Satta Matka originated in the 1950s when it was known as 'Ankada Jugar'. It evolved into betting on the opening and closing rates of cotton being transmitted to the Bombay Cotton Exchange from the New York Cotton Exchange via teleprinters. In 1961, when the New York Cotton Exchange stopped the practice, bookies looked for alternate ways to keep the game alive.
Pioneers like Kalyanji Bhagat in 1962 introduced the Worli Matka, followed by Ratan Khatri in 1964 who founded the New Worli Matka. Slips of paper containing numbers from 0 to 9 were placed in a large earthen pot (Matka), from which numbers were drawn. Over time, playing cards replaced the pot, but the name Matka remained.
